What Disney’s 2019 D23 Expo Made Me Realize About Being A Mom And A Blogger

Listen … I’ve been seeing the letters MCU all over the internet for awhile now, but I had NO clue what they meant until today when I started following Disney’s 2019 D23 Expo online! Don’t judge me! Lol

It’s not like I’m this BIG Marvel fan or whatever. But still! I’ve GOT to do better man! Lol (Especially as someone who’s now an entertainment blogger! Not a mommy blogger, or a fashion blogger, but an entertainment blogger! So yeah, I feel like this is something I should KNOW! Lol)

P.s – The MCU I’m referring to is the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

But here’s the thing … I grew up not really being able to watch movies or tv shows. We didn’t have cable. I wasn’t allowed to watch this or that on TV, or even read certain books. So I kind of just settled for the disappointment and pushed everything aside.

Even when I did Fashion Show in High School, I LOVED working behind the scenes and watching everyone put the set together, and helping get things ready, while I tried to remember my lines! But after ALL that preparation, I didn’t even get to perform!

I stayed late ALL those nights for nada! Our final rehearsal was so damn BAD (according to our Fashion Show Director lol) that he screamed at us after we screwed things up, and then made us do our run through again! Which made me get home way later than I was supposed to. (Pretty sure it was only 8pm, but yeah, that was a big no no.) So my mom said I couldn’t go to the actual show the day later! Almost 10 years later and I’m still upset about it.

At one point of my life, I WANTED to be an actress! I’ve let that “dream” go along time ago, but every now and then I tell the story about how I could have been on Glee, and my face lights up as I think about it.

But my mom would have NEVER let me skip school “just” to act, so I didn’t even BOTHER going to the auditions! Still not even sure how I got the call for that audition either. Lol But whatever! Because of everything that happened in my childhood, I just pushed this side of me aside.

Up until this very moment, me scrolling through the internet looking at 2019 D23 Expo social updates and looking at the D23.com website so I can write a few blog posts about everything that’s happened this weekend, since I wasn’t there myself, I didn’t realize how much this stuff really means to me!

I didn’t really REALIZE how much I loved Sci-Fi until maybe a year or two ago? I didn’t realize my awe at how detailed costumes for films and shows are, or how the set works, and how backstage life really is, was a THING! I didn’t realize I just LOVED the ins and outs of movies and tv shows.

Disney's 2019 D23 Expo

Hell, I’ve been pretty convinced that I could just work in the youth development field all my life and I’d be happy with that! But this morning Disney’s 2019 D23 Expo made me realize that maybe I could make a living out of watching movies and tv shows all day long. Lol (Since I’m pretty sure that’s what y’all think entertainment bloggers do most of their time.)

Which, is actually true! Lol It’s nice to sit down and say “I gotta watch this series on Netflix because it’s for work”. Lol

But before today, I didn’t even think I could BE an entertainment blogger! Hell, I didn’t think I’d be good at it! Why? Probably because I don’t know half the actors/actresses I love names! I know their faces WELL, but I don’t know their names. I don’t remember what “that movie I loved so much” was called. I don’t know any trivia facts about nothing!

I don’t remember half of anything in Harry Potter. I “pride” myself on being “not that big of a Marvel fan” because well … I’m not a BIG fan of anything! I wasn’t allowed to geek out on anything I really loved as a kid, and I guess growing up I just let the thought of that stuff go. I figured because I didn’t know much, I’d just be seen as some fraud. So I let the idea of it go!

But what people don’t know is that I got screamed at as a kid for watching certain things, so I just didn’t bother. I had to basically hide the fact that I was reading Harry Potter, so eventually I just stopped reading them altogether!

It’s still a big deal if I watch the movies now at home too, cause you know, it’s the Devil’s work and stuff. If it has anything to do with even the thought of magic, or dancing, it was a no. Which, funny enough, is everything I love! So I let it all go! Not realizing I was letting a piece of myself go in the process!

But after checking out Disney’s 2019 D23 Expo today, I realized that I DO love this stuff and that I do still have time to “learn it all”. I also realized that I don’t need to know every darn trivia fact in the world. Lol Cause let’s face it, my memory is TRASH! I’m never gonna remember all those little trivia facts whether I want to or not. Lol And that doesn’t make me a fraud, it just means my memory is trash! That’s it.

Disney's 2019 D23 Expo

So instead of focusing on what I don’t know, and how trashy my childhood was, I’m just gonna focus on giving my daughter a better childhood.

I see the way she watches the Disney Channel, and all the movies that come out on Disney Now, since again, we still ain’t got no cable. Lol But the same way she watches the Disney Channel and Disney movies now is the same way I watched them when I was younger (at my uncle’s house)!

Which is why I can’t WAIT to get Disney+! We’ll be able to geek out on Disney movies and shows the way I never got to as a kid. The way we watched the Descendants yesterday. (With her singing all the damn songs and tryna do the dance, driving me crazy. Lol) And knowing that makes me feel so much better!

Plus, I’ll just challenge myself to watch all those Disney movies I never got to watch (and boy are there a lot lol) with my daughter so she can watch them too! I also have a ton of stuff to watch to catch up before the new shows and movies release on Disney+ as well! So there’s time!

Disney's 2019 D23 Expo

Today Disney’s 2019 D23 Expo taught me that I don’t have to have it all together to claim it! I can be an entertainment blogger even if I haven’t seen every movie in the world! I can love movies and tv shows and still not remember one damn fact about them, or hell, even its name! Lol

But most of all, the fact that I didn’t get to do these things growing up, just means I get to share this experience with my kid, who’s also a Disney lover and who will appreciate watching a few movies for the very first time with her mom. So here’s to a new blog, and a new “life”. Lol Here’s to remembering that I can still do the things I wanted to do, even if it makes me feel awkward!

If you’re looking to catch up on the latest Disney movies and shows as well, make sure you subscribe to my newsletter and follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest!

I’ll be starting a new movie challenge every month for the next few months and I’d love to have you join in with me! If you’ve already watched them then you’re way ahead of the game! But if not, then great! We can watch them together! (And then we can discuss them in my Facebook Group,Hey, I Watch That Too made specifically to discuss all things movie and tv show related. Lol)
