Earlier this year, when the news about the new Mulan Live-Action movie dropped, we also got word that there would be no Mushu (or songs) and that was enough for me to wanna “throw this entire film away”. Mushu, aka the talking dragon, who was played by Eddie Murphy, was my FAVORITE character! So to have them pull that comedic bit out was heartbreaking! So I’ve pretty much ignored all news of the new Mulan film since then, except for the bit about Mulan being on Disney Plus in September! But everything else I ignored! Until I saw THIS video clip in my email this morning.
I’ve been doing a LOT over the last few days since I’m covering the American Black Film Festival this month, so I barely have time to go through all the emails I get. But this morning I was reminded of the emails and decided, since I haven’t seen the trailer, (remember I stopped paying attention because my heart was broken and I could in fact not go on) that I would at least take a look at the clip.
And now I’m excited!

Watching the clip below, I finally made peace with the fact that this new Mulan movie isn’t going to be the animated, cute, funny, family film we millennials are so used to.
The new Mulan live-action film, directed by Niki Caro, is meant to be a true action film and I’m finally at peace with this.
Especially since family movie nights have become more of a weekly thing in our household and my parents are super picky about what they watch. *rolls eyes*
They hate the animated cute films, and lean towards more of the intense, action packed, adventure films, so this will be great for my entire annoying family who can never pick a movie that satisfies ’em all.
And since my parents HATE going to the movie theater (because they’re old and like to annoy me apparently) having the new Mulan film on Disney Plus makes it easier for us to watch it together. Just don’t tell them that this thang costs $30 to purchase or they’ll FLIP! They hate when I spend money, let alone money on movies, soooo yeah, don’t tell them!
Anywho, I’ll stop rambling now!
Here’s the clip that made me excited to watch Mulan on Disney Plus.
In this clip, Niki Caro tells how she found the perfect actor to play Mulan, with commentary from Yifei Liu, Tzi Ma and Yoson An.
And here’s another clip I watched that helped me get excited …
And here’s another (I love stunt BTS stuff) …
And here’s the new trailer if you haven’t already seen it …
Starting on September 4 (a few days before my birthday on the 9th), with Premier Access, you can watch “Mulan” before it’s available to all Disney+ subscribers. Disney+ will offer Premier Access to “Mulan” for $29.99 on disneyplus.com and select platforms.
Once you have Premier Access to “Mulan,” you can watch as many times as you want on any platform where Disney+ is available.
You're welcome! I'm kind of excited to see what everyone else thinks.…
