the water man movie thoughts

Thanks to the Toronto International Film Festival, I got to watch The Water Man movie before its initial release, and I am super excited to share my initial thoughts.

The Water Man is an American drama film directed by David Oyelowo, in his feature directorial debut, from a screenplay by Emma Needell. It stars Oyelowo, Rosario Dawson, Lonnie Chavis, Amiah Miller, Alfred Molina and Maria Bello. Oprah Winfrey serves as an executive producer via her Harpo Films banner.

Here Are 44 Thoughts I Had While Watching The Water Man Movie

1. Black sci fi? This better be good damn it! Mainstream theater good!

2. Awww this is so cute.

3. They better put that African music in there!!

4. I forgot Oprah is an executive producer!

5. David do me proud, ok?

6. Look at him reading at the table!! Yesssss! Show that Black boys enjoy reading!

7. Why he said he went to a funeral so casually?? Like he was invited or something!

8. I love how the pages of his novel are animated!

9. Damn son, he’s definitely a dad who doesn’t get their artsy son! I bet you he’s not the sports type and he dead tried to wake him up at 8am? For sports! AND ruined his damn art work?? I’d be mad AF too!

10. Ok wait, so is the water man good or bad??

11. Sis charging kids to tell them a story??? I hate her! *laughs* But she’s so smart!

12. Omg that drawing is so good!!!

13. Damn they eating cereal for dinner cause dad can’t cook? Le struggle!

14. I love the comic animations.

15. Oh lord! This boy gon’ go in them woods???

16. Really hoping this is good enough for the theaters!

17. Damn dad you ain’t gotta scream at him like that!

18. Dad is stressed TF out and taking it out on his kid, and it’s causing his kid to hate him. Ugh! I hate this.

19. The beginning is a little slow, but hoping it picks up.

20. Look at him being smart and knowing to pay attention to his surroundings! Yesss!

21. They bought cans of peaches and no damn can opener? Kids!

22. Black folks love them some samurai swords!

23. Oh shit, ok … it’s about to get interesting! But why he ain’t wake her up?? Why’d he go alone??

24. Why can we see his breath all of a sudden??

25. Interesting but also boring. Ugh! I keep checking my phone ’cause it still hasn’t kicked in yet.

26. It’s been like an hour and I’m disappointed that it’s not more interesting and exciting.

27.  These bugs!!!! OMGGG! Maybe I talked too soon!

28. I swear if this doesn’t get GOOD fast I’m gonna scream.

29. The music score is good but that’s not helping the storyline! It’s dull. I need more action, more surprises, something crazy! Anything.

30. If I’m being honest, I wanted Raising Dion excitement!

31. The score is really driving this. Thank goodness for a good score! But it might be better than the actual movie? I keep waiting for something great to happen and … yeah.

32. Lord please don’t let this girl be some flake!

33. There has to be a twist here! Come on now!

34. Wowwwww not the kind of friend she would have? Because he’s Black?

35. He’s acting his ass off right now!!! Major props to this kid yo!

36. Disappointed this movie got like 15-20 mins left and nothing excited has happened yett.

37. So the last 15 mins are gonna be the best thing of this movie seriously? I needed this energy throughout the entire movie! Not just at the end.

38. Omgggg the snow they saw!!! It was probably *omitted*.

39. I hate movies that wait until the end to get interesting.

40. Movie is too safe! Let someone die, let something drastic happen, I wanna be shocked! So I guess this may do good as a family film then? Maybe that’s the route they were going in?

41. Maybe Hulu will pick it up??

42. Now, why would they fade out before they said amen?!! Ugh!

43. Lonnie (Gunner) was the star, but this didn’t meet my sci-fi needs.

44. I’m actually really upset this wasn’t better. I needed to scream at my screen and be scared for someone’s life! I don’t know man, this was way too relaxed for a sci-fi film.

However, I’ll have a full review of The Water Man movie up soon! Until then, here are my favorite quotes from the film.
