The Photograph’s Star Issa Rae Learned This About Love From Her Mom
Issa Rae stars in the new romance movie, The Photograph, which releases in theaters on Valentine’s Day. And with the new movie quickly approaching, the cast, got on Twitter today to answer a few questions.
And that’s when Issa told us that her mama told her some toxic ass advice about love when she was younger. Lol
So what was the advice Issa Rae’s mom told her?

“Don’t love a man more than he loves you.” – Issa’s Mama
And honestly, I ain’t mad at it. Lol Issa Rae may think this is toxic, but personally I’m starting to think her mama is right. I know it sucks, but it ALWAYS seems like I care more about others than they care about me, and that’s not a great feeling.
So I can see why her mom told her this. Do you think this is toxic?
More love advice from the cast’s moms …

More about The Photograph …
The Photograph is an upcoming 2020 American romantic drama film written and directed by Stella Meghie.
It follows the estranged daughter (Issa Rae) of a famous photographer who falls in love with the journalist (Lakeith Stanfield) assigned to cover her late mother.
A lot of relationship advice passed down through family comes wrapped in protection. Sometimes parents teach people to guard their hearts because painful experiences shaped the way they view love. Other times, those words can create fear around vulnerability and emotional connection.
The truth probably sits somewhere in the middle. Caring deeply for someone should never leave you feeling invisible, emotionally drained, or constantly questioning your worth.
Healthy relationships still need balance, effort, honesty, and mutual respect. Conversations around dating, emotional boundaries, and self-worth continue to evolve, and Dating by Blaine offers thoughtful perspectives for people trying to navigate modern relationships with more confidence and clarity.
At the end of the day, every family carries different ideas about love, commitment, and trust. Some advice ages beautifully, while other lessons deserve a second look after real-life experience changes your perspective.
Professional relationship guidance can also help people recognize unhealthy patterns, improve communication, and break emotional cycles that quietly damage connections over time.
Love may never come with a perfect rulebook, yet wisdom, patience, and self-awareness still matter more than dramatic one-liners shared around the dinner table.
