the lovebirds movie review

I finally had some time to sit and watch The Lovebirds movie on Netflix yesterday, and I don’t even need a few days to process my thoughts to write this review!

(Which is crazy! Lol)

However, I will say that I’m extremely sad that I couldn’t see this during SXSW back in March! I would have loved to sit in a theater to watch this! And being one of the first people to see this thang would have made it THAT much better.

But enough of my first world, blogger privilege problems. Lol Here’s my review of The Lovebirds movie, now streaming on Netflix.

This Thang Is Straight Up Hilarious

Like, I kid you not, I was dying from the moment this thang started until the very end. Okay, I’ll be honest – there were parts in the middle that didn’t make me cackle out loud, but I laughed for most of this movie and that’s all that matters!

I truly enjoyed watching this!

And if you run on sarcasm (yes sarcasm, not Dunkin’ lol) then you’re probably gonna love this too! All their “jokes” are subtle remarks that they say to each other when they’re annoyed and it’s just funny as hell! Lol Like you can’t even tell if they’re really arguing cause the shit they arguing about is funny AF!

The Amazing Race? Come on now! That show ain’t even relevant right now! Are they making a comeback? Lmao What year is this?! That’s what they wanna argue about?

But it was so relatable and funny to watch! You best believe, as a 90s kid, if I were in a serious relationship back then, I’d wonder if we could make it through The Amazing Race!  Why TF not sir?

Why can’t we get on this show and whoop these other couples ass and win some money? And what you mean you think we wouldn’t win! Lol So yeah, I can totally get the argument and it was super funny.

Honestly, The Lovebirds has the humor we wanted from Coffee and Kareem …

But unlike The Lovebirds, instead of just a ton of humor, we got a cursing kid. Lol

(I mean the movie was still funny, and you can read my review of Coffee and Kareem here. I totally laughed while watching it, I just think we could have done without the cursing kid!)

However, The Lovebirds was just written with joke after joke after joke! All the little under their breath comments is what made me laugh so much. If you know me, that’s exactly how I am and what I do. Don’t ever go nowhere boring with me, cause I’m just gonna whisper a ton of stupid shit to you so you can laugh. Lol

Even the ending of The Lovebirds is hilarious, and I’m glad it ended on a cute note.

But there’s one thing that could have made this movie better.

Hell, had I paid to see this in a theater I would have been extremely pleased and satisfied with my purchase. Honestly, that’s the only thing that would have made this movie better! Sitting in the theater, eating popcorn, and sipping on an ice-cold coke!

Okay, so maybe that’s not the ONLY thing that could have made this movie better. Maybe Issa coulda kissed Kumail like she actually WANTED to kiss him? THAT definitely would have made this a whole lot better! Lol

That first kiss scene was just weird, and I couldn’t tell if it was just a lack of commitment on her part to dive into that role, or if she was supposed to not kiss the guy that was supposed to be her date who she ENJOYED being with! Lol

All I’m saying is, I ain’t need no convincing when she kissed Lakeith in The Photograph! Okurr! Lol But this kiss felt a bit stiff, and looked like she really didn’t wanna do it, but since she was being paid too … okay fine then! Lol

Oh, and I may have noticed that the music wasn’t that noticeable.

I don’t remember what song came on when I said to myself, “this feels like the first song I’ve heard”. And I’m pretty sure it wasn’t even the first one, but the songs and even the scoring in this, aren’t really noticeable.

The music is really subtle in this movie, it’s mostly background stuff and nothing that really drives or enhances the scenes. (I know it’s not an action film or anything, but even The Photograph had a great jazz score that I think really enhanced the film.)

I would have loved to hear 50 Cent’s “In Da Club” song playing during the club/party scene. Lol Now whether or not they could have gotten 50’s ass to let them use his joint in this, is another story for another day, but that scene could have totally used a popular (aka mainstream) hip hop song from “back in the day”. Lol I’m just saying!

Oh, and I loved the singing in the cab scene. Is this why someone asked Issa when her album was gonna drop? Lol

I also loved that the man was jealous for once, instead of the woman.

Even if he was worried for NO damn reason. Lol It’s always nice to be reminded that yeah Black girls are BOMB as f*ck, and everyone wants some, so stay on ya toes, my dude. Lol Nah, but seriously! (And he wasn’t overly jealous either! Lol)

Also, I wonder if that’s a big thing in interracial relationships?

Like, he’s a man of color, yes, but he’s not blackity Black, like Keith, so maybe that’s a worry for dudes in interracial relationships? That maybe one day this foine ass amazing Black girl is gonna wanna date another Black man? They didn’t go into this in the movie, but it’s just a thought from how he acted!

But listen, I see why he was jealous of Keith! Keith was foine as hell! Come on now. Lol Plus he was a smart, techy guy, great job, I get it! Lol But men also need to remember that when they’re chosen, they were chosen for a reason. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how great another guy SEEMS, she still wants you!

And I’m not gonna lie, I was rooting for them to get back together the entire movie.

But despite the lack of music and weird kiss … The Lovebirds movie was great!

The moments when Issa and Kumail were just being a couple were cute as hell. (It was literally just the kisses that were weird.) And I loved how the name of the movie was thrown into the dialogue at the end! So cute!

But it really sucks that I couldn’t see this in theaters! I woulda been in there just laughing up a damn storm. Lol And I already know it woulda been fun with a crowd!

But whatever Corona! I still got to see it, and it was still great!
