should i watch sinners

Listen … I’ve been excited to share this review since I was halfway through watching Ryan Coogler’s new vampire horror flick, Sinners. So if you STILL haven’t watched it, and you’ve been sitting there wondering, “Should I watch Sinners?” — let me tell you again, Sinners is THAT GIRL — and I mean it! The last time I was this hyped over a horror film was The Blackening, and y’all saw how good that was!

But the real question is …

Should You Watch Sinners In Theaters Or Wait For Streaming?

sinners movie review

And honestly? If you can see it in theaters, you should! But if not, streaming is okay too.

Either way, just make sure you watch Sinners.

My thoughts before screening Sinners

I’m not gonna lie — I was nervous.

I don’t do horror, so sitting in an almost empty IMAX theater had me whispering to myself, “oh you in danger, girl.” But between Coogler’s name and the promise of a Black vampire story?

I couldn’t not watch. You know what I mean?

And baby, I’m so glad I did.

Here’s what Sinners is actually about (no spoilers)…

Set in the Deep South, Sinners dives into a blues-soaked world of faith, folklore, and fortune. It follows twin brothers, Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan), navigating family legacy, sin, and supernatural power as a new kind of vampirism takes hold in their community. Think Southern gothic, Black folklore, and religious trauma—wrapped in Ryan Coogler brilliance.

Here’s What Works

The artistry in Sinners is an absolute masterpiece.

From the blues-inspired tracks to the gospel and soulful moments, the music pulses through the story in a way that feels both authentic and cinematic.

The hand-drawn opening immediately sets the tone — haunting and beautiful — and the cinematography that follows is not only stunning but immersive. Every frame feels deliberate, from the smoky juke joints to the intimate character moments, right down to the lighting in the final scenes.

As someone who grew up in a heavily religious household, I had all the feels.

The correlation between music and sin, between joy and judgment, is so real. We’ve all heard the stories about how blues music was “the Crossroads” and how Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the devil for musical skill — something the film touches on partially — but personally, Preacher Boy’s story hit differently for me because my dad also thought the music I liked was “the devil’s music.”

Character development is another major win.

The twins, Smoke and Stack, both played by Michael B. Jordan, feel like real life characters, both with their own distinct layers of personality, charm, and complexity.

However, Stack, the snarky, devious twin, and my fave, gives us “Black Southern menace with a heart of gold” energy, and it’s impossible not to fall in love with him. But beyond the twins, the story captures love, grief, survival, legacy, and community in ways that are profound without ever feeling forced.

And y’all … can we talk about the scene where Smoke teaches a young Black girl how to negotiate?! A whole-ass lesson in business and self-worth, right there on screen, in a time when women still don’t get paid as much as men. I could literally cry thinking about how awesome that moment was.

Now, the vampires themselves?

They’re truly just a creative vessel for Coogler’s message.

At its core, Sinners is about reclaiming identity, faith, and power in a world that’s constantly tried to strip those things away from Black people. It explores what it means to be free, spiritually and even financially, outside of the systems we’ve been told to trust. So while some may complain there’s a lack of true vampirism throughout this film, I truly didn’t have an issue with this at all.

And I’ve seen the film four times!

Ryan Coogler’s direction and writing, combined with Michael B. Jordan’s performance, elevates the material in a way that feels quite rare to witness on screen.

Plus, the dialogue is smooth and witty, the story is layered and absolutely beautiful, and the characters are all grounded by hope, and culture.

Sinners isn’t about respectability politics — it’s about the gritty, sweet, mystical, complicated, Black AF reality of life, and that shines through in every moment. From the makeup and costumes to the pacing and music cues, everything works together to create a full cinematic world you’ll never want to leave.

Now … Here’s What Doesn’t Work

Honestly? Not much. The film runs a little over two hours, and I could’ve easily stayed in that world for another hour or two. If anything, I just wanted more.

More music, more vampires, and dare I say a bit more joy?

But otherwise, it’s my favorite film of the year.

Do you need to watch anything before Sinners?

Nope! This is a standalone film.

Just bring your popcorn, your church trauma, your dancing shoes, and maybe a cousin or two.

Is Sinners scary?

I’ll be honest. I’m not a horror girlie, so yes — Sinners can be a bit much for those who are terrified of all things horror! There are a few jump scares that hit, eerie moments that will make you clutch your pearls and popcorn, and enough suspense to keep your heart racing.

But here’s the thing — it’s not just about being scared for the sake of it. The scares are woven into the story, the music, and the world Coogler built, which makes them feel meaningful and earned, and ultimately not as scary as we would think this would be.

So if you’re a scaredy cat like me, don’t worry — I’ve got you covered. Check out my Scaredy Cat Horror Review of Sinners for tips on how to survive it without losing your mind (or your snacks!).

Trigger Warning: blood, gore, jump scares, violence, grief, religious trauma, and family loss

With that said, should you watch Sinners in theaters or wait for streaming? The honest truth…

This movie demands a big screen. But as I said, I won’t hate you if you watch it on your couch.

Theater Experience Pros:

  • That IMAX sound is incredible during the musical sequences.
  • The visuals can be quite dark, so they do look better on a bigger screen.
  • The audience reactions add to the overall vibe and enjoyment of this film.

Streaming Pros:

  • Perfect for rewatching scenes you’ll miss while screaming. Or that sexy scene of Michael. *ahem*
  • Easier to pause when those jump scares get you.
  • You can control your volume levels, if you’re a scaredy cat.

Verdict: See it in theaters. This one’s an experience for sure! And if you can, catch it in IMAX for the full impact.

Now, if you’re heading to theaters … You might be wondering if you should watch Sinners in IMAX, IMAX 70mm, or 4DX?

Here’s the thing — Sinners is phenomenal in every format, and according to Ryan Coogler, there are seven different ways to watch Sinners in theaters.

But each one is a bit different, so choose the one that’s right for you, depending on what you’re looking for — whether it’s the richest visuals, the deepest sound, or a full-on immersive experience.

Here’s a quick overview of each format I’ve already seen …

Sinners in IMAX 70mm

If you can catch it in IMAX 70mm, please do. This is the special format Ryan Coogler created for us, and not everyone will be able to watch it, since it’s not in every theater. So if you’re lucky to have a theater screening Sinners in IMAX 70mm take advantage of that.

Sinners in IMAX

IMAX is still an incredible option if IMAX 70mm isn’t showing near you. And it’s honestly my favorite format for this film. The sound mix in IMAX alone makes it worth it — when that blues music kicks in. I know everyone says they love Dolby sound more than IMAX, but I’m not convinced yet.

Sinners in 4DX

Now, if you want chaos (in the best way), you’ll want to see Sinners in 4DX. The seats move with every chase, and the air blasts make the jump scares more powerful. I broke down all the chaotic fun in my 4DX experience recap, and honestly? It’s perfect for those who want to see Sinners in multiple formats.

If you want to see the formats compared side by side, check out my TikTok videos:

Format Verdict: If you can only pick one, and it’s available near you, go with IMAX 70mm. The experience feels the most intentional to Coogler’s vision: lush, haunting, and cinematic. But otherwise seeing Sinners in standard IMAX is perfect enough.

Overall …

Sinners is a bold, blues-drenched, Southern gothic tale about faith, sin, and freedom.

It’s haunting, sexy, and deeply soulful. It’s story celebrates Blackness in all its complexity without centering trauma. At its heart, it’s about reclaiming identity, joy, and power — and that cultural depth is what makes it quite unforgettable.

Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan have created a world that feels real despite its fictional tale — a mythology born straight from our roots. And by the time the credits roll in, you’ll want to clap, dance, and hug the cast. This is the Black fantasy we’ve all been waiting for.

Escapism Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 out of 5 stars, for a story that transports your body and soul)
Movie Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 out of 5 stars — because Coogler and Jordan are masterful together)
