Because when I tell you that Ryan Coogler’s new vampire horror flick “Sinners” is THAT girl?! THAT movie! I mean it! The last time I was THIS excited over a HORROR film, was The Blackening baby! And y’all saw how good that joint was!
So let me just gon and start this off by saying … this film is a little over 2 hours long — and in the words of our homeboy K. Dot … it’s not enough! I could have EASILY sat in this world for ’bout 3, 4 hours! THAT’S how good this film is!
When I say I sat in an almost empty IMAX theater and chuckled to myself … oh you in danger girl … thinking I’d be scared and lonely because I don’t do horror, and was pleasantly surprised! I was NOT ready for how AMAZING this movie would BEEE!
I was right about the scary part though! Those jump scares got me good! So if you’re a scared cat like me, I’ll share a scared cat horror review for you in the next few days.
But oh boy was this film so worth it!
I mean, the …
We see …
BABY!! This horror film isn’t JUST a horror film. “Sinners” isn’t even just a Black-led horror film. It’s a blues music-inspired masterpiece, soaked in Southern gothic vibes, mixed with folklore, rootwork, vampires, and religious trauma that screams a new era of Black fantasy now reigns down upon us! And only someone like Ryan Coogler could deliver this!
I had all the feels.
The correlation between music and sin, between joy and judgment, is so real.
I know we’ve all been told the stories about how blues music was “the Crossroads” and how the blues legend Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for supernatural musical ability. Which is partially what the film is about.
But I also grew up in a household where my father believed the music I liked was “the devil’s music”, so Preacher Boy’s story felt personal to me.
More importantly though, the characters feel true, the dialogue was smooth and witty and the story was layered, beautiful, and Black as hell. Not in the respectability politics way, but in the gritty, sweet, complicated, mystical way.
Not once! But twice! Because he plays both twins, with what looks like, ease!
Of course, the snarky, devious character “Stack”, is the twin brother we can’t help but love (and lowkey thirst over). He gave “Black Southern menace with a heart of gold.”
And yes — he was my fave!
But can we talk about how there’s a whole scene where his brother Smoke “employs” and teaches a little Black girl how to negotiate?! A whole-ass lesson in business and self-worth on screen!! In a time where women STILL don’t get paid as much as men.
I could literally cry just thinking about how awesome that moment was.
But baby … MBJ and Coogler knew what they were doing with this one!
The girlies are gonna melt. Not only are these characters portrayed as smart Black men, they’re also sexy! Like, don’t bring yo man to watch this one with you, if he doesn’t wanna accidentally hear you moan during that one … sorry two … sex scenes! Clothes on and all!
It’s got the jump scares, eerie moments, and a whole lot of blood, without all the trauma!
There’s no lingering shots of suffering just to make us feel something. With this, we feel because it’s rooted in something deeper: our culture, our stories, our magic.
The vampires are truly just a creative way to get Coolger’s message across. At its core, “Sinners” is about reclaiming identity, faith, and power in a world that’s constantly tried to strip those things away from Black people. It explores what it means to be free, spiritually, and even financially, outside of the systems we’ve been told to trust.
Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan really have something special here!
By the time it was all done, I was ready to clap, dance, and hug the cast. Hell, I wanted to high-five Coogler myself. And I’m sad I haven’t gotten to tell him this in person yet!
But THIS is what we mean … what EYE mean … when we say we want Black fantasy. Not those god damn slave movies Hollywood keeps greenlighting!
And the end and mid-credit scenes are also worth the wait.
Plus … did I mention the makeup and costumes!! Every part of this movie is so well put together, so damn divine.
What I would have done to be a fly on the wall while they created this!! Whew.
6 out of 5 stars, easy.
So yes you need to go see this. Bring your brother, your cousin, your best friend, your uncle twice removed. Bring your church trauma, your sage, and your dancing shoes!
Show up EARLY, grab your popcorn and drinks, and snack during the trailers, because I promise you … eating while watching isn’t the greatest idea when you’re watching this for the very first time. It’s hard to stuff your face while you’re screaming at the TV.
I hope you have an awesome experience!!
