Okay!! Because why was “Mufasa: The Lion King” SO GOOD!!! Y’all remember when I cussed about these ugly Lion King character posters and that damn pride rock popcorn bucket on TikTok? I was so damn annoyed, I didn’t even bother watching Mufasa when they invited me to the screening!! But guess who randomly threw it on this weekend? And why did my daughter who said she wanted nothing to do with this movie, sit on the edge of my bed, and watch the entire thing with me on Disney Plus y’all?
Look — I was not expecting to love this as much as I did! But I doooo!
From the very first scene, I was hooked. The songs? A whole bop. The story? Way better than I imagined. And the voice acting? Incredible.
… because shoutout to Blue Ivy!! She did such a great job voicing Kiara I forgot it was even her … and thank goodness, because I was not ready for another moment like Beyoncé in The Lion King. (No shade, but I HATE when you can only hear the celebrity, and not the actual character. Like, it shoves you right out of the story!)
I loved learning about Scar, through Mufasa — as the side character he is. Poor tink tink. But we finally got to see how he became who he is, how he got his scar, and how he got the name. And it was SUCH a clever and deep exploration of male entitlement baby!!!
Like… this man really thought he was gonna be king just because someone told him he would be?! He didn’t work for it, didn’t earn it, didn’t even TRY. Just sat back, and let his BROTHA do all the work! Every time something went wrong, where was he?
Hiding!
Like the coward he was! Yet still, he expected to be handed leadership all because someone told him he should lead. Brotha, in christ, abeg!
One can not be a leader, just by saying one is a leader!
And not to be a snob or anything -- but I can think of one particular boss I've had who has tried to pull this same crap at work! Expecting loyalty and respect, simply because they had a fancy title, only to be confused when no one gave a damn about them because they were actually terrible leaders!
So boy was this fun to watch!
Whew. The drama was top-tier. The storytelling? Chef’s kiss.
We needed more songs. Six just wasn’t enough! I don’t know if the budget ran out before they could ask Lin-Manuel Miranda for more, or if they spent too much on the CGI characters instead, but I could’ve used at least three more bops.
That being said… “Bye Bye” is that girl! The same way y’all love “I Always Wanted A Brotha” is the same way we love “Bye Bye”! I don’t care what anyone else says. ‘Cause if you disagree … I too, can make you go … bye-bye. Play with me if you want too, baby!
But all jokes aside, I wish I had seen this one in theaters — it’s that good.
So if you haven’t watched it yet, run to Disney+ and hit play! I’m already planning to watch it again, just for the music alone! And I just remembered Disney sent me a digital copy of the film, so I’m watching that this weekend!
Bonus features, easter eggs, the making of Mufasa — ALL OF IT! I can’t wait!
“Mufasa” is now streaming on Disney Plus.
