safety movie thoughts

Thanks to Disney Plus, I got to watch the Safety movie a few days early, and I am super excited to share my initial thoughts.

If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, you can click here to watch it.

Safety is a drama inspired by the empowering story of former Clemson University football safety Ray McElrathbey (Jay Reeves), a young man facing a series of challenging circumstances, whose dedication and persistence help him to triumph over repeated adversities. Aided by his teammates and the Clemson community, he succeeds on the field while simultaneously raising and caring for his 11-year-old brother Fahmarr (Thaddeus J. Mixson).

Here Are 65 Thoughts I Had While Watching The Safety Movie On Disney Plus

safety movie disney plus poster

1. Awww the drums in the opening! I love that! Y’all know I love me some drums.

2. Awww I miss sports movies! This making me so excited.

3. How old is this boy before I start drooling?

4. I totally have that marvel shirt! Well, I may have ‘stolen’ it from someone, but it’s mine now!

5. He’s so Italian! He gave him a full meal on day one, gosh.

6. Awww they call them young pups! Why is that so cute?

7. When “5 more mins” means you’re late. Don’t we all know the struggle.

8. This what we doing at 5:30am? Oh hell naw!

9. Aww I remember this song!

10. I already knew he was gonna be an ass about this. UGH!

11. The Outkast ringtoneeee!!!

12. Oh they made this movie Black Black, huh?

13. God I hate the sounds of football gear hitting. *cringe*

14. They really made this shit black AF! Lean back though? Dang!

15. She really quoted Lauryn Hill!?

16. At this point I don’t know if I should be happy with all the Black music or offended?

17. How he a changed man and he need a ton of guys to stare him down, to intimidate him?

18. Why does this part feel so weird?

19. I knew he was learning about *omitted* for a reason.

20. Wow so just like that they *omitted*? No consideration for the kids?

21. Wow his brother just willing to go to foster care? Like he’s already so broken he’s willing to just enter the foster care system! That hurts my soul.

22. Imagine having to hide your whole brother while being in school! It’s not even the fact that you gotta work out for football, and go to class at the same time, and take care of a kid, but having to hide it is a whole other struggle we don’t talk enough about. Suffering in silence makes everything harder!

23. That’s how he gets him to the bathroom? OMG!

24. Awwww his roommate is so amazing for helping him like this!

25. Why does that line hurt? Like I can tell he’s not doing it “just because it’s free”. He’s doing it because he feels like he has too.

26. Awwwww he makes him do affirmations in the morning!

27. Wowwww I just noticed the wardrobe! I haven’t seen stripes like these on a man in forever!

28. I don’t know if I like the way this sound is mixed. Sounds cluttered.

29. Omgggg he’s scared to change his clothes because he thinks …. *cries*.

30. I know this frustration! It’s out of stress. I go through this all the time.

31. Awwww he’s excited to see her. He doesn’t resent her.

32. Why they keep saying this program free of charge like free makes it better! And why they keep f*cking using foster care like it’s such a f*cking great solution?!!! Stop!!!

33. And here come the tears!

34. Awwwww this is such a Coach Carter moment, I’m gonna cry.

35. I think I always wanted to join a club or sports because I always felt like they always had a family. Even if they had to go through hard workouts, or hard moments, they always had someone they could talk too and go through it with.

36. They really made me cry though!

37. They gon’ make me cry again??

38. I’m gonna cry again?? Seriously??

39. Omg is his coach gonna take his brother in???

40. Omg they’re gonna get him a *omitted*?

41. I’m gonna cry again!

42. Gosh he gotta get a job too?? Ontop of everything else??

43. Yup! Crying again.

44. This monologue though! All the feels.

45. I’m crying again.

46. This is such a good movie. Such a good story! If you liked Coach Carter this is Coach Carter’s baby brother.

47. I have such a weak spot for at risk kids.

48. Awww I didn’t even realize his jersey number was my favorite number until I saw her in the jersey.

49. God knows it takes a lot for us to really let in help! To be okay with accepting it. This reminds us that it takes a village to raise a child!

50. Watching him stress and being frustrated like an actual single parent is hard. Watching his brother walk through the rain because they can’t accept help is even harder.

51. That boy had better not run away!! I swear he had better not!

52. Omg they gon’ make me cry again? I can’t cry again!

53. His brother not wanting to be a burden? *wipes tears*

54. Omg I’m not crying again!!!!

55. That’s why he *omitted*! I really gotta cry again?

56. I can’t believe he doing all of this for a f*cking waiver. I swear to god if he was white they wouldn’t even be in this room!!!

57. All of this just for transportation to and from school, after school care and some extra funds? This makes me so mad.

58. Ended with the same drums the movie started off with. I like that!

60. Omg he was on Oprah!! I missed this?

61. Watch the credits y’all!

62. Knowing this is a true story makes this hit so much harder. Knowing I’ve come across kids who have had it this hard hurts! I’ve worked with at risk youth. This means more to me than a lot of the shit I watched this year. I know he may not think this story was worth telling because this is a choice he knew he had to make but this story was needed!

63. So many people don’t understand how much black kids go through! I don’t think this will help them understand much but they’ll be a tad bit more aware. I hope people understand this isn’t just a story! This is life for us!

64. Such a good story! Glad it got to be told!

65. If anything Safety is a reminder that it’s okay to accept help and let the people around you in.

Whew! That was a lot. Like the most notes I’ve ever shared about one film. But it was so needed. And to think that’s not even my review? Clearly I have a LOT to say about this film. So if you’re still with me … here’s a full review of Disney Plus’s Safety movie and my favorite quotes from the film.
