Dear Disney, We Don’t Want Pixar Soul On Disney Plus (At Least Not In 2020) And Here’s Why

ALL THAT JAZZ – In Pixar Animation Studios’ upcoming feature film “Soul,” Joe Gardner is a middle-school band teacher whose true passion is playing jazz. A single unexpected step sends him to the cosmic realms where he finds the “You Seminar”—a fantastical place where Joe is forced to think again about what it truly means to have soul. Jamie Foxx was tapped to voice Joe. Directed by Academy Award® winner Pete Docter (“Inside Out,” “Up”), co-directed by Kemp Powers and produced by Academy Award® nominee Dana Murray (Pixar short “Lou”), “Soul” will debut exclusively on Disney+ (where Disney+ is available) on December 25, 2020. © 2020 Disney/Pixar. Disney released their decision to release Pixar Soul on Disney Plus a few days ago, and I refused to read the email. I’m literally on the verge of tears as I write this. I didn’t read the email, or engaged in too many convos about Pixar Soul being released on Disney Plus over the last few days because my heart can’t take it. To say that I’m disappointed in Disney right now is an understatement.

So why am I on the verge of tears instead of being overjoyed that my family will get to watch Pixar Soul for free this year?

Here’s Why I’m Not Happy With Disney’s Decision To Put Pixar Soul On Disney Plus (For Free)

Pixar Soul deserves a red carpet roll out … point blank period!

So many other movies got the red carpet treatment (like Frozen 2, which I actually had the pleasure of attending last year) and now the ONE movie that’s going to cater to Black families is getting cast aside like the unwanted child in a room full of adults having grownup conversations?

Yes, Covid is still happening, yes we can’t gather for big events, and yes Disney needs to recoup whatever they spent to make this movie. HOWEVER … they’ve moved other movies! Wasn’t Black Widow supposed to drop this year? How come their date was changed? Why wasn’t Black Widow added to Disney Plus? Oh right, Marvel movies get special treatment right?

Black families don’t matter that much, but them Marvel fans though! *sigh*

Then to add insult to injury …

Not only are they adding Pixar Soul to Disney Plus, but it’s also free!?

Mulan went to Disney Plus but we had to PAY for it.

Let me repeat … MULAN went to Disney Plus but we had to pay THIRTY whole dollars for it! And people paid!

So they KNOW folks are willing to cash out for movies they want!

So why isn’t Pixar Soul getting the “Disney Plus Premiere Access” treatment? They just gon’ throw it on Disney Plus like they did Artemis Fowl, huh? *sigh*

As if we won’t pay and show out for Soul like we did for Black Panther?

Come on Disney, y’all know better! So act like y’all know better! Cause now I’m just starting to think y’all just doing shit just because, with no real rhyme or reason behind it.

I mean, Soul ain’t even get no promo this year! There were Black bloggers who write about entertainment and Disney who had no clue this movie was coming out until we posted about it in our Disney Moms Of Color Facebook group! How sway?! Oh right, because Disney dropped a trailer and then that was it!

Pixar Soul is the first Pixar film to feature a Black male lead!

That alone should make Disney interested in giving this movie some real dang promo and the respect that it deserves but alas, it’s only the first Black male lead right?

It’s not like it’s the first White male lead or anything important. *rolls eyes* Before this shit makes me mad again, let me go!

‘Cause why would they think we wouldn’t notice their lack of promo, or the fact that Mulan was premium content, but Soul ain’t? After the shitty year 2020 has been, did they think we wouldn’t notice?

Did they think we’d just be happy the movie is free and not notice the way this movie was just brushed under the rug? Did they think we wouldn’t feel some type of way? Well guess what WE FEEL SOME TYPE OF WAY!

And I know it ain’t just ME! But whatever Disney, Pixar, just keep pretending like we don’t deserve nice things!

It’s 2020 and folks are hip to the disrespect!

DO BETTER! Hire some mo’ Black folks and DO BETTER PLEASE!

Just because we’re not boycotting you doesn’t mean you don’t still have a lot of growth to do! It doesn’t mean that there’s nothing wrong with what you’re doing! Please do better! I know it’s probably too late for Soul, but I really hope they get it together for future movies.

Are you excited for Pixar Soul’s Disney Plus premiere? The film will be available to Disney Plus subscribers on Dec 25th.
