A few days ago my daughter and I went to our very first painting class together, in celebration of Toy Story 4’s in home entertainment release. The movie released on Digital a few days ago, on Oct 1st, and on DVD + Blu-Ray on Oct 8th, (plus it’s on this cute Steelbook as well). But when I first got the invitation I knew it would be an anxiety fest if I went! Lol I can’t draw or paint for SHIT! (And neither can my kid. Lol) But I wanted to go anyway! The experience was what mattered right?
Now that the class is over, and I managed to get through it without wanting to curl up in a ball and die lol, here’s how you too can survive your first painting class.
1. Worry Bout Yo Self!
No matter who you’re sitting next to, don’t look over your shoulder! Don’t sneak a peek at anyone else’s work, just because you wanna see if “you’re doing it right” or whatever the case may be. Worry bout yo self! Trust me! Every time I looked at someone else’s painting I felt my anxiety kick in! “They’re doing SO good” I kept thinking. “I can’t even get the damn colors right.” But this isn’t a “who did it best” contest, so stop comparing your work to everyone else’s and just …
2. Try Your Very Best!
I’m not a painter, but I definitely tried! I can’t draw for shit, but I still tried to pay close attention to the lines and shapes and details. Every time I looked at someone else’s work and felt bad about my own, I reminded myself that I have NO CLUE what kind of training or skills these other people had, and that despite it all I was trying my very best! That’s what matters the most so …
3. Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff!
So yes, my alien looks stupid, and I made a few (thousand) mistakes along the way. Lol But why sweat the small stuff when it’s the finished product that counts? Pencil mistakes can’t be seen when you’re painting over them, so don’t sweat it! I even messed up on one of the paint colors and I could have easily been upset for the rest of the night due to that one issue, but I pushed through and finished anyway! Now I have a painting of my own, and I’ve finally completed my first painting class, so …
4. Just Have Fun!
These events aren’t supposed to be stressful! But when your anxiety and imposter syndrome kicks in, it can be hard to really enjoy something you KNOW you suck at. Lol (Especially if there are people in the room that are REALLY good at it.) But if you seriously keep reminding yourself that you’re there to have fun, and you relax, your first painting class will become enjoyable!
Listen, my kid KNOWS she can’t draw! And even I was surprised at how calm she was when her drawing didn’t come out that great. But you know what she did? Instead of getting upset, she focused on what she was good at. She mixed up a pretty color of her own, and painted her canvas the way she wanted it. She ended up painting right over her drawing and just filled her canvas with a color she made all on her own! Even my 7 year old knew that this painting class was supposed to be fun!
Toy Story 4 DVD & Funko Pop Giveaways
This week, I’ll be hosting 3 (slightly) different Toy Story 4 giveaways, which will give you 3 different chances to win a copy of the Toy Story 4 movie on DVD or digital, along with some cool Toy Story 4 magnets and a Toy Story 4 Funko Pop mini keychain!
Since everyone always complains when I do one giveaway on one specific social media platform, because somehow it’s always the platform someone doesn’t have, and I have more than enough swag to giveaway, I decided this time around I’d do three separate giveaways! This way, you can enter them all or enter the ones you have accounts for! (Just know that if you DO enter them all, you won’t WIN them all. Lol)
Please note that all 3 giveaways end on 10/27 and are open to USA residents only. (If you don’t win the giveaways, check out this post. Best Buy has a CUTE steelbook you can purchase.) Good luck!
