Can you believe it’s gonna be June in a few days? Like how sway! HOW! But it is, and since I promised myself last year when I quit my job that I’d focus on Black films more. I’m keeping that promise! Starting with (but not really) this post. Lol
I mean, I’ve been writing about Black films ever since I started writing! It’s just in me! My review of The Photograph even went viral in February!
So yeah, I write about Black movies!
But I do wanna make it a BIG deal to support even the smaller Black films that may not get as much recognition as the films with bigger budgets, and more famous actors. I’ve been rooting for everybody Black way before that phrase became a thing, so it’s time I show that! Consistently!
So every month, I’ll highlight as many Black films as possible on all of the streaming platforms that I use (and have, but probably don’t use as often).
Here Are 5 Black Movies To Watch On Netflix In June 2020
Juwanna Mann – June 1
When pro basketball star Jamal Jeffries (Miguel A. Núñez Jr.) gets booted from the big leagues after an outrageous on-court stunt, his unwillingness to give up the sport leads to desperate measures.
Dressed in drag, Jamal calls himself Juwanna Mann and becomes a star player on a women’s basketball team, helping them climb the ranks. He also quickly develops a crush on team captain Michelle (Vivica A. Fox), but cannot act on his feelings for fear of his true identity being discovered.
Inside Man – June 1
A tough detective (Denzel Washington) matches wits with a cunning bank robber (Clive Owen), as a tense hostage crisis is unfolding. Into the volatile situation comes a woman named Madaline (Jodie Foster), a mysterious power broker who has a hidden agenda and threatens to push a tense situation past the breaking point.
The Help – June 1
In 1960s Mississippi, Southern society girl Skeeter (Emma Stone) returns from college with dreams of being a writer.
She turns her small town on its ear by choosing to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent white families. Only Aibileen (Viola Davis), the housekeeper of Skeeter’s best friend, will talk at first. But as the pair continue the collaboration, more women decide to come forward, and as it turns out, they have quite a lot to say.
Cook-Off – June 1
Yearning for a better life, a single mother with a passion for cooking gets a shot at greatness when her son enters her into a top reality cooking show.
Da 5 Bloods – June 12

Inside Man was an interesting movie. Denzel Washington is one of my favorite actors.
It really was! And he’s one of mine too. Have you seen any of the others?
I have heard The Help is a “white savior” movie. Do you agree? I liked so many things about it, but I can definitely understand that point of view. I felt the same way about Hidden Figures, some great messages but history twisted for the Kevin Costner character.
Sorry for the late response on this, but there are LOTS of white savior movies and tv shows and yes this is one of them. I personally cringe anytime I walk in a white neighborhood and see Black nannies. But I understand I have no control over what people do.
