I just don’t get the hype!
Look, I love me some Margot Robbie (when she’s playing Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad, and I also loved her in Suicide Squad … the not really a sequel, second spin around the block in this DC universe.
And this photo is really pretty! Hell, the shades of pink are LOVELY, if you wanna talk about this bubblegum pink! But I’m gonna need a LOT more than just Margot in a pink convertible to get me excited about this new “Barbie” movie.
For starters, let’s try answering this: why are we getting a new Barbie movie next year? One that looks like it may be geared towards adults? What for?
Did we run out of movie ideas in Hollywood?
I’m seriously confused.
And are people excited just because it’s Margot or? What did I miss?

See, the “Barbie” (2023) movie first look photo is pretty, but it’s not exciting!
Especially when we don’t know much else about the new “Barbie” (2023) movie, outside of Margot Robbie playing Barbie.
Okay well … we do know a few things, like some of the cast.

This list is a little comforting since I love America, Kingsley (One Night In Miami), and Will! And I can’t wait to see Simu (Shang Chi), Ritu (We Are Lady Parts), and Ariana (In The Heights) in this.
I know you’re probably wondering why I didn’t mention our girl Issa, but I don’t dig her comedy, so unless she’s playing a more serious character that one’s up in the air for me.
I loved her in “The Photograph“, and “The Lovebirds“, but I still never got into “Insecure”.
We also know that Greta Gerwig is the “Barbie” (2023) movie director, BUT …
She also directed “Little Women” which I HATED! Soooo … I’ve been a little worried as to how boring “Barbie” will be compared to “Little Women”.
And I had to steal this little blurb about the film from Letterboxd, so we had an idea of what we’re supposed to be watching.
So here’s what the “Barbie” (2023) movie is supposed to be about …
“A doll living in Barbieland is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world.”
I mean … at least the concept sounds cool. And Barbie being expelled explains why everyone is excited for Margot as Barbie. I guess. Given what she did with the Harley Quinn character, I can see her playing a frustrated Barbie.
But Ryan as Ken is gonna be … something. I don’t wanna be ageist here but isn’t he a little too old for this role?
Sigh. I guess we’ll see! I’m still not completely excited just yet. But I will hold out hope that the new “Barbie” movie will be good. Although that’s what I said about the Little Women movie and we all know how I feel about THAT!
So we shall see! They’ve got a few months to drop some trailers that wow me ’cause right now I’m not completely sold on the idea!
You know WHAT WOULD do the trick though? Riding around in a pink convertible myself! So if Warner Bros wants to get that together for a press day, call me!
