A No Spoiler Review Of The New Aladdin Live-Action Movie For Us 90’s Babies

Soooo … guess who saw the new Aladdin live-action movie last night y’all? Yup! I did! This girl! Lol And I’m so freaking excited to tell y’all that … it was GOOD!

As a 90s kid, I worried this Aladdin movie would be subpar, and I know you were probably worried too. But rest assured when I tell you, that you’re not gonna hate this remake! Lol

Some might complain about Will Smith being the Genie (because they been complaining since they found out), and some might say it wasn’t great, but I’m here to tell you them fools lying to you! Lol

And if they ain’t a 90s baby, then their opinion doesn’t even count! Lol

Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Mena Massoud as Aladdin in Disney’s live-action adaptation of ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

Look, I know how important this movie was for our childhood. Just like The Lion King, and Toy Story … these movies ALL had an impact on our lives. So I think I speak for ALL us 90’s babies, when I say “Disney better not f*ck these remakes up”! Lol

Am I right, or am I right? Lol Come on now!

So since this movie releases on Friday, May 24th … here’s a few questions you may have lingering on your brain right now.

(If there’s anything I missed, please leave a comment below and I’ll add the question to this post!)

Does Will Smith’s Genie live up to Robin William’s Genie?

Will Smith is Genie in Disney’s live-action ALADDIN., directed by Guy Ritchie.

Um … let’s get one thing straight!

Will Smith ain’t Robin Williams! It’s that simple. So if you’re going into this movie still thinking about how Robin Williams KILLED his role as the Genie, LET ???????? THAT  ???????? SHIT ???????? GO!

(Yeah, I had to add the claps in there, cause some of y’all 90s babies only hear me when I’m loud and ghetto AF! LOL It’s cool tho, I ain’t worried.)

However, I’m serious! DO NOT go into this movie biased! You will sit there and roll your eyes and sulk the entire time. Cause guess what? This ain’t the 1992 version y’all! And Will ain’t Robin!

Aladdin (Mena Massoud) meets the larger-than-life blue Genie (Will Smith) in Disney’s live-action adaptation ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

So did Will Smith be overly dramatic the way Robin Williams played the Genie? No! But does that mean this Genie wasn’t as good? NO!

Will brought his own flare to the Genie, and I KNOW it was hard for him trying to live up to these expectations everyone had for him!

But everyone seems to ignore one simple fact … no one can be Robin Williams!

Mena Massoud as the street rat with a heart of gold, Aladdin, and Will Smith as the larger-than-life Genie in Disney’s ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

Now I will say this … Will brought a modern spin to this Genie! The way the Genie talks, moves, it’s totally modern, so our kids will probably be able to relate. (Hell us 90s kids can relate. Lol)

And the Genie is STILL hilarious! Just in a Will Smith kind of funny, way! (Y’all know how stupid he was in Fresh Prince of Bel-air. Lol Remember THAT Will going into this movie, and you’ll be fine.)

Do they ever mention Aladdin’s parents?

YES! Lol They actually do!

A friend of mine asked this question on Facebook, and I was so excited to know the answer. Lol

Aladdin (Mena Massoud) and Jasmine (Naomi Scott) flee from palace guards on the streets of Agrabah in ALADDIN, a live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic.

Now they don’t talk about his parents much, or about who they were. However, Aladdin does tell Jasmine why his parents aren’t around, because of course her nosey self asks. Lol

(We as women, really are nosey. Lol Be wanting to know where the entire family is! Lol So how’s your cousin, twice removed on ya mama’s side? She still good or nah? LOL) Anywho ….

Is there a balance of action and romance?

Mena Massoud is Aladdin and Naomi Scott is Jasmine in Disney’s live-action ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

This is another question my friend asked on Facebook, and I wanna say that there was a great balance between action and romance.

It wasn’t too lovey dovey, which if you’re single like me is great so you don’t have to sit there annoyed at how many times he kissed her. Lol

Aladdin (Mena Massoud) and Jasmine (Naomi Scott) flee from palace guards on the streets of Agrabahin ALADDIN, a live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic.

Most of the romantic scenes, are small scenes like above. You can just feel the chemistry between them, which I love.

Is this movie funny? Like, really funny? Not that fake funny shit!

Why yes! Yes it is! Lol Let me tell you how this shit was SO damn funny I was crying! Lol

When I say the entire theater busted out laughing all together for a few scenes! Lol Aw man. (Pretty sure they were all 90s kids! Lol)

Nasim Pedrad is Dalia and Will Smith is Genie in Disney’s live-action ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

So yeah, this movie is definitely funny! And not that … haha .. I see what you did there, funny, but genuine humor!

But I mean … Will Smith played the Genie so you KNEW it was gonna be funny! Lol

However, Dalia, Abu and even the magic carpet also contributed to the humor of the film.

Wait, who the hell is Dalia?

Nasim Pedrad is Dalia and Naomi Scott is Jasmine in Disney’s live-action ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

Welp … glad you asked. Lol Dalia is Jasmine’s best friend and handmaid.

She’s freaking hilarious and everyone needs a best friend like Dalia. Lol She also has a few moments were she’s in the spotlight, and they’re awesome!

Are the songs in this new Aladdin live action movie as good as the songs in the old version?

Can I be honest?

This one’s a hard NO for me! Lol

I was disappointed in Arabian Nights. I mean that’s legit my FAVORITE song ever from Aladdin. I STILL sing that shit like I wrote it. Lol

(Not that I know any of the words other than Arabian Nightsssss. Lol)

Naomi Scott is Jasmine and Mena Massoud is Aladdin in Disney’s live-action ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

However, growing up the way that song was sung spoke to me. Don’t ask me why! But it was POWERFUL! This one was sung by Will Smith, and some others and yeah … it just wasn’t the same powerful feeling I got when listening to it.

Prince Ali was cute! Lol Especially the way they performed it, so I’ll give them that.

A Whole New World was good … but that’s because who ever sang for Jasmine can SING! Lol Aladdin on the other hand … was aiight!

Friend Like Me was also … cute! Lol

I think if we watch the movie a few more times it’ll grow on us. Cause I mean it’s Will Smith and I love him! Lol And it’s not like it was BAD, it just wasn’t the same, so you’ll need to adjust your ears. Lol

Marwan Kenzari is Jafar, Naomi Scott is Jasmine and Navid Negahban is the Sultan is Disney’s live-action ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

So yeah, the music wasn’t the same as it was before, but it was still good! I just LOVED the music in the older version, so I think it’s gonna take a bit longer for me to get used to these new songs.

Although, I can’t wait to hear the full soundtrack, because that song in the end credits is dope! Lol

I also wanna hear what my daughter thinks! If she starts tryna sing the songs with them then you KNOW they’re good! Lol She hasn’t seen the older version yet, so she’ll also be unbiased. Lol

Did Marwan Kenzari’s Jafar live up to my expectations?

Navid Negahban is the Sultan and Marwan Kenzari is Jafar in Disney’s live-action ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

Actually … yes! I don’t think Jafar in this new remake was as bad as before, but Marwan played this role well! I was REALLY worried about this before I saw the movie because I actually like Jafar.

(Don’t judge me … I always like the villains, they have a story … they’re misunderstood. Lol)

So seeing the way Marwan played Jafar in this movie was kind of comforting. After I watch the movie again, I’ll let you know more about what I really think of Jafar’s role. But if you see it and have some thoughts, leave it below in a comment and let’s talk.

How does this new remake compare to the old movie?

I wanna say compared to the old movie this was a solid 8.5 out of 10? I’m taking points off because of the music, and of course because the Genie in the older version was AMAZING!

But I STILL think this movie was great. I mean it was intense! At some point I found myself on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what happened next. Lol

Marwan Kenzari is Jafar in Disney’s live-action ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

Let me tell y’all how the ENTIRE theater GASPED all at the same time at one point! Lol

I bust out laughing right after. Like the ENTIRE room jumped! How freaking crazy is that? Lol

So this movie was definitely great! I think it’s just gonna take some adjusting, and for us 90s kids to go into this movie unbiased!

Do I need to bring tissues? Is this going to make me cry?

Nah! Lol You’re not gonna cry! Maybe in The Lion King, but not in this Aladdin live-action movie!

Mena Massoud is Aladdin and Naomi Scott is Jasmine in Disney’s live-action ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

Trust me … I get emotional AF in movies, but this one didn’t make me feel THAT sad. I mean, what’s really sad in Aladdin anyway? Lol

What’s Abu like in this new remake?

Well we all know he doesn’t talk! Lol However, he’s not AS dramatic and funny as in the older version. He’s a bit more on the sarcastic, side eye, personality side? Like instead of being dramatic, he’ll just give a look. Lol Still a good thief though, so there’s that! Lol

Overall Thoughts

I’m gonna watch this movie again this weekend, and then watch the older version, to do a better side by side comparison.

However, I think this movie was great! It was funny, it had us all on the edge of our seat, and practically almost jumping out of our chairs. Lol And everything was done so well! I mean look at those costumes!

Mena Massoud is Aladdin and Naomi Scott is Jasmine in Disney’s live-action ALADDIN, directed by Guy Ritchie.

If you’re complaining about this remake, it’s probably because you’re still comparing it to the older version, which you can’t do! I’m sorry!

This remake honestly wasn’t made with us 90s kids in mind! It was made for OUR KIDS!

But that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it! So let the old version go for a moment, and just live in THIS moment!

Because I mean … this was a LIVE ACTION movie! They BUILT them sets y’all, they DID the damn thing! Have an open mind … and leave the kids home for the first time. Lol Just enjoy it! Cause I sure did!
