is mortal kombat 2 worth watching

Okay so, I got invited to an advanced screening of Mortal Kombat 2, and after watching the first film the night before (which I actually enjoyed more than I expected), I was genuinely excited to see the sequel on the big screen. Even MORE excited when Tati Gabrielle herself showed up to the screening! (Video for proof!) However — while I did enjoy Mortal Kombat 2 for what it is, would I be a critic if I didn’t have a few things to critique? I know a ton of folks are already super excited to see this one, but if you’re still on the fence about whether Mortal Kombat 2 is worth watching in theaters, keep reading.

(And even if you’re NOT on the fence … you too, should keep reading, because I’m gonna give you the real deal below, without the fluff.) So …

Is Mortal Kombat 2 Worth Watching?

Absolutely! Especially if you’re a gamer! And if you’re not looking to take this seriously.

But if you’re looking for deep character development, emotional stakes, or a storyline that fully pulls you in? You’re probably gonna wanna wait for this to hit streaming services, and I’ll tell you why below.

First … here’s what Mortal Kombat 2 is actually about (no spoilers) …

Mortal Kombat 2 follows a new round of fighters pulled into the deadly Mortal Kombat tournament as different realms battle for survival and power. Familiar characters return alongside new faces, with alliances shifting, betrayals unfolding, and increasingly brutal fights deciding the fate of everyone.

Now Here’s What Works

Let’s start with the visuals, shall we? Because those are killer!

Seriously! I’ve already added this film to my critic association film awards list for set design and visual effects because they truly did an amazing job with this film — visually! Every arena looked like it was pulled straight out of a video game!! And that’s probably my favorite thing about this film.

But the costumes were also really cool, the lighting was gorgeous, and the sound design made every punch, scream, and weapon hit feel massive. The creatives absolutely understood the assignment when it came to the look of the Mortal Kombat tournament.

The feel? Maybe not so much, but I’ll talk about that below.

However, I did also appreciate how committed the film was to the franchise references. The Harry Potter jokes made me laugh, and the random Squid Game callout worked well, too.

Yet — Kano, being the comedic relief the movie desperately needed, ended up being a total shocker for me because he was super duper annoying in the first film! And while I have issues with the choreography overall, the powers and fight sequences looked incredible. One particular scream-based power sequence blew me out of the water! Especially after watching how they treated the Scarlet Witch in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie! The mother in me felt a bit redeemed that the mother in Mortal Kombat 2 got to have a cool arcana.

Also … the end credits scene and credits design themselves were insanely creative, so please don’t leave before the credits. However, there is no mid or end credits scene, so you don’t have to stay for it all.

I also LOVED the fight scene between the two (only) Black characters because at that moment it felt like I was watching myself play the game on a big screen. I was famous for picking the characters who looked like me, so it was cool to see that moment on the screen for us blerds who played growing up.

Look — there’s a lot to love about Mortal Kombat 2 if you’re looking for a fun time in theaters. Mortal Kombat 2 is a visually stunning spectacle with killer set design and unforgettable fatalities!

But if you’re like me, and always looking for something a bit deeper, that’s where things can fall apart.

So Here’s What Doesn’t Work

The story. It’s painfully underdeveloped. For me to fully commit to a fantasy world, I need to go through all of the emotions, and this world felt a tad dull. I mean … the movie kept telling us that the stakes were life-or-death, but it never actually made us feel that urgency emotionally. Characters die, betray each other, and fight constantly, but none of it made me FEEL anything.

Mortal Kombat 2 is flashy. It’s loud. It’s visually impressive. But it has no soul.

Honestly, the movie follows almost the exact same formula as the first film, which made parts of it feel repetitive and predictable instead of exciting. And as I mentioned before, the choreography is cute, but you can see it’s all fake. Some sequences were entertaining. Others felt a little too polished and overly “dance-like”; instead of feeling brutal and grounded. I don’t like being able to SEE the movie magic happening, and unfortunately, that happens a lot in this film.

Then there’s the tone. One minute someone’s getting dismembered, the next minute the film is trying to wink at the audience, and while the wacky Marvel-like humor usually works for me (*ahem* looking at you Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3), a lot of this film felt like it was trying too hard to be funny.

So, should you watch Mortal Kombat 2 in theaters?

If you love the games? Yes. This is absolutely a “watch it with a crowd” kind of movie because the audience reactions honestly made the experience more entertaining.

If you care more about storytelling than spectacle? You may leave frustrated, so wait for streaming.

This is one of those movies where your enjoyment totally depends on what you need.

I mean, my theater experience was literally just a room full of nerdy men cheering every time somebody got brutally murdered while I sat there questioning whether I had accidentally walked into a horror movie instead of an action fantasy film. The deaths in this movie are gruesome. Like… “what the actual fck” levels of gruesome. And there’s a bit of makeup that reminds me of Sinners.

Escapism Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 out of 5 stars – Perfect if you want to shut your brain off for a bit.
Movie Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ 3.5 out of 5 stars – Because I need more than cool visuals …

Is Mortal Kombat 2 scary?

Not traditionally scary, but it is extremely violent and gruesome.

Some of the deaths genuinely border on horror movie territory, so if you’re sensitive to gore, body horror, dismemberment, or excessive violence … this may not be entertaining for you.

I counted about six gruesome death scenes? SIX! So baby, buckle up!

Trigger Warning: Extreme violence, gore, dismemberment, graphic deaths, body horror, screaming, fantasy violence, blood, weapons, parental death, intense fight scenes.

Final Thoughts: Yes, Mortal Kombat 2 is worth watching!

But only if you’re looking for a fun time in theaters! Deep inspirational messages about life are not included. As a story? It’s underwhelming. But as a visual experience? It’s absolutely stunning.

The set design, costumes, visual effects, sound design, and even the end credits absolutely carry this film on their backs. You can tell the filmmakers were laser-focused on recreating the energy of the games. I just wish they had remembered to give the story an emotional pulse, too.

Mortal Kombat 2 feels like a movie designed for people who want cool character reveals, flashy powers, brutal fatalities, and video game aesthetics above all else. Through and through, it’s what we call a “guy movie”. So while the storytelling is weak AF, the visuals, production design, and commitment to recreating the game’s world are undeniably impressive.

And honestly? The “GET OVER HERE!” moment alone had the theater losing it. Me included.
