Last night I met up with a friend of mine that I haven’t seen in awhile so we could catch up and see Us. Now, I’m not a fan of horror movies … okay scratch that … I absolutely HATE horror movies! So I only watch them every once in a million years? Lol And only with someone I love to pieces if they’re DYING to see it. Lol
That wasn’t the case last night, since I texted him and asked him if he wanted to go, but with all the talk about the movie I wanted to see what it would be like. (Clearly I’m nosey AF! Lol) I legit wanted to see Us just so I could talk about it with everyone else! Lol (Stupid reason to spend $17.40 on a movie ticket, but it was totally worth it!)
“I absolutely HATE horror movies! So I only watch them every once in a million years.”
Before we even got to the movie I made sure to warn him so he knew what he was getting himself into. I made it very clear that I don’t do horror movies and I was only going because I wanted to debate with others about the meaning behind everything. Lmao That way in case it was extremely scary, he knew why TF I looked like I was ready to cry, run, or pretend to be sleeping so I didn’t have to look at the screen. Lmaoooo
I have to admit, I definitely invited HIM for a reason! Not only did I want to catch up since we haven’t seen each other in awhile, I figured if I got scared I could just bury my face in his jacket or lay on his shoulder and close my eyes and he’d probably laugh at me but at least I’d feel safe. Lol Y’all think I’m joking when I say I don’t do horror movies? Lol
I’m way too paranoid to watch every horror movie that comes out! And it’s definitely not my genre of choice. I’m more of a rom com and animation film kinda girl. Lol So basically baby stuff will do just fine! Lmaoooo
“I have to admit, I definitely invited HIM for a reason! I figured if I got scared I could just bury my face in his jacket or lay on his shoulder and close my eyes and he’d probably laugh at me but at least I’d feel safe.”
As you can see from my last few movie reviews, I enjoy shit like Captain Marvel, Fighting With My Family, The LEGO Movie 2, Ralph Breaks The Internet and The Grinch. Lol Simple, cute, family movies! Lol (Maybe that’s because I don’t go to the movies alone or with friends enough to see adult movies which I’m gonna have to change this year clearly.) But anyway, you get the point!
I went into the theater prepared for the worst, especially after watching the trailer, and half kiddingly kept repeating “rainbows and unicorns, rainbows and unicorns”. Lol

And at the beginning of the movie I was definitely on edge because I had no clue what was going to happen! But after we got through that long ass semi-boring intro, which I almost thought had no purpose (silly me lol) I began to relax. As the movie went along I could see what kind of writer Jordan is and I started to enjoy the movie!
Us isn’t what I would consider a traditional scary movie which is probably why I enjoyed it so much. It honestly felt like a horror parody! (You know like what they tried to do with the Scary Movie series?) But so much more professionally and creatively done.
I hated the Scary Movie series because it was just STUPID! But Us was disguised as a real horror movie, with all the real feels of a horror movie, but still I could sense the jokes Jordan portrayed through out! Y’all know how we scream at the screen at all the white folks like “bxch run why are you going in the house”! Well yeah, I did ALL OF THAT during Us, but the whole time I was screaming at the black people. Lmao
“I went into the theater prepared for the worst, especially after watching the trailer … but Us isn’t what I would consider a traditional scary movie which is why I enjoyed it so much.”
Like, “girl why tf are you going upstairs”, “girl she said run and you gonna stop to catch ya breath, you dead ass”? Lol There were SO many more moments where I found myself thinking a black family would never do this shit and that’s when I realized maybe he wrote it this way on purpose! Us is supposed to be funny and it is! And because it was funny it made me relax and actually enjoy it.
There were also a few twists and turns that I didn’t see coming which I loved! By the end of the movie I could see how great of a writer Jordan really is. At the beginning I was thinking, how the hell he not gon show us when her son was born, why wasn’t that detail given?
I went from wishing we could fast forward through the first few minutes of the movie, to thinking damn it I need more details here. Lol But then as the movie went on I realized why he didn’t need to show when her son was born!
He didn’t need to because she … I’m totally not about to tell you why. Lol You’ll see why when you watch it. Lol But once I realized what was really going on it made sense why he skipped what I thought would have been a great addition to the movie.
“By the end of the movie I could see how great of a writer Jordan really is.”
The ending also made the long semi boring beginning make sense as well. Lol But I still have questions about the ending. Lol My friend waited until the entire credit scene was over to see if there would be an Us 2 and then got mad when he realized there wasn’t. Lol “How he gon end it like this?”, he screamed!
All I could think was Jordan is a damn good writer and I love that he ended the movie with us wanting more! I still want some answers though! I need to know what happens next!
But yeah, I didn’t cringe or close my eyes or squirm one bit throughout the movie. I didn’t need to hide my face in his jacket either. Lol The blood also didn’t bother me and I HATE seeing blood. (Like, I hate that I have to bleed every month, hate blood. Lol) So if I can get through this so can you girl! Seriously!
The trick is to go with someone you know you’re going to enjoy being with regardless just in case you need extra support like I did. Lol Talking and laughing at the stupid things they do also helped. Because don’t get me wrong, there were still moments where I was like “oh shit, oh shit what’s about to happen, please don’t”, but they were enjoyable moments that added suspense to the movie, not moments of terror!

So if you cringe at even the littlest bit of blood, get scared when there are bad things about to happen to good kids, or just hate horror movies in general and thought the Us trailer was enough to give you nightmares for a week, I’m here to let you know that it wasn’t that bad sis! Lol Grab a friend, a drink, and some popcorn and enjoy the show! Seriously!
And I know I saw some people complain about the movie being wack – but that’s probably because they thought Us would be this terrifying, gruesome ordeal when it wasn’t!
I haven’t seen Get Out yet (because again, I don’t do horror movies) but after seeing Us and seeing what kind of writer Jordan really is I think I wanna see Get Out. But only if someone I love watches it with me and we can talk through it, cause I’m still a bit scared. Lmao
“I didn’t cringe or close my eyes or squirm one bit throughout the movie.”
Now, if for some reason none of what I just said convinced you that you should go see Us this weekend, how about you do it for the culture? Sis, this was a horror movie and 3 out of the 4 black people we loved lived! Hello!
If that ain’t enough for you to go check this out I don’t know what else to tell you. Lmao Because we really walked down the street after the movie and I had to really stop and say, “hold on you complaining about the ending but 3 out of 4 black people in this movie just lived”. Lmao Since when do the black people actually make it to the end of the movie?
He totally thought the son would die first too! Lol And I assumed the father would be the first to go because LAWD, mess much? Lol She needs to reconsider him as a husband after all this. Lol I don’t wanna give away anything else, so just go see it! Lol
“Sis, this was a horror movie and 3 out of the 4 black people we loved lived!”
Oh and before I forget, is it crazy that I loved all the actors when they were acting like their evil doppelgängers more than when they were acting normal? Lol Like the acting while they were evil was SUPERB, while the acting while they were normal was a little subpar in my opinion. But Us is definitely worth watching either way! You will NOT have nightmares, relax. Lol So go see it!
