Fighting With My Family Movie Review
A few days ago, I was invited by Annapurna Pictures to attend an advanced screening and press junket (interview) for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s new movie Fighting With My Family, and I have to say I was intrigued right from the start.
I mean, who doesn’t love The Rock? Lol And he’s pretty much hilarious in everything he’s in, so I was totally up for it! Even if I wasn’t a huge fan of WWE and knew absolutely NOTHING about the person he was making this movie about, Paige.
Paige who? I had no clue who she was when I got invited.
But after watching the trailer for Fighting With My Family (a few times, because it was that funny) I was convinced that she was the best thing since sliced bread and was extremely excited to watch her life pan out before my eyes. (FYI, my daughter is still jealous I got to meet her at the interview. Lol More about that later.)
But honestly, I wasn’t prepared for how inspirational this movie would really be!
I mean I already knew this movie would make me laugh because The Rock plus Stephen Merchant (who’s the Fighting With My Family movie director and writer) is basically a golden ticket to Laughtown! Lol
Have you seen The Tooth Fairy? Lol It was SO good! I was laughing from the moment the movie started to the moment it ended! And they both worked on that as well, so of course, I knew this would be good.
This movie isn’t just filled with comedy and dirty jokes though, it’s also filled with inspiration, emotion, and love!
One thing that rings clear throughout this entire movie is that this family doesn’t just LOVE wrestling, they also love each other!
Listening to Paige’s father, who had already gone to jail for years, be so willing to sacrifice a few more years of his life and go back to the very thing that put him in jail years ago, just to ensure that his kids were fed and the bills were paid, just reminds me of what parents are really willing to do for their kids!
Just because they were from Norwich, a small town in London, doesn’t mean that they parented any less than us Americans.
So yeah, he taught his son how to strangle his daughter properly, so what? Lol He also taught them how to go after what they really wanted in life!
Paige and Zak reminded me of my brother and me when we were younger.
We pretty much fought all the time, and my brother LIVED for watching WWE (or was it WWF at that time lol) so he could “practice” his new moves on me.
(Don’t worry, that never happened, I was smart enough to say no. Lol)
However, this just goes to show that Fighting With My Family is extremely relatable if you grew up with siblings!
Who the hell didn’t fight their family from time to time growing up? Lol
But what I absolutely loved about this movie is the way it transitioned from humor to emotions so smoothly.
One minute you’d be laughing and the next moment you’d be on the verge of tears.
And I really felt Zak’s pain throughout this movie! Yes Zak, not Paige! (You have to watch it to see what I mean.)
How many times have you wanted something, to only have someone else “take it from you” and “steal the spotlight”? Think something small, something a friend or sibling accidentally was just good at when you tried your hardest to get better.
And no matter how hard you try to be happy for them, it’s just too hard to watch them do the very thing you wanted to do! I don’t think I’ve ever had that happen per se, but I can totally understand his point of view.
But do you have to be a WWE fan to watch this?
I mean you don’t have to love WWE to love this movie! Hell, you don’t even have to watch WWE. I haven’t watched wrestling since the 90s and I still loved this movie!
Fighting With My Family is more than just wrestling! It’s about believing in yourself and fighting through the obstacles life throws at us, and to accomplish the things we really want to do. It’s also about learning how to handle disappointment and failure.
Watching Zak struggle with the disappointment of not making it to the WWE and having to redefine his purpose in life was really comforting. Often times, movies only portray what happens when someone makes it or doesn’t make it.
But Fighting With My Family took it one step further and showed us that it’s okay to be upset when you fail. And that failing doesn’t mean you should throw your entire life away because you didn’t accomplish that one goal.
As Paige said in the movie, “just because millions aren’t cheering when you do [something], doesn’t mean it’s not important.”
That line hit me HARD!
Sometimes we think if we’re not in the spotlight then people don’t care about us or what we’re doing and that’s not true.
Sometimes we influence others more than we even know.
Is Fighting With My Family okay for young kids?
Yup!
I mean, this movie is rated PG 13, so if you’re thinking about taking the kids with you, which I think you should, just be mindful that there are a few curse words throughout the movie.
There’s also mention of a penis; some intense, “gross” parent PDA (public display of affection); and “hot girls” in bikinis with boobs! (For those of you that have sons. Lol)
I took my daughter with me when she was 6, so most of the dirty jokes went right over her head thankfully. Lol But if your kids are older, they may flip out over the use of penis, or seeing boobs. You know how kids are. Lol
It’s not much to REALLY worry about though.
There’s also a bit of drug content, but once again the younger kids don’t really get this stuff, so it shouldn’t be a problem.
I mean the only thing my daughter remembered after watching Fighting With My Family was that Paige was a badass, and one of the few women to make it in wrestling! By the end of the movie, she was in love with Paige!

All in all, Fighting With My Family is a must-see for families everywhere.
I’m really glad we got to see Fighting With My Family when we did and I’d love to see it again. (It’s actually on Hulu right now if you want to check it out.)

However, after watching this, I now have a bigger appreciation for wrestling. Growing up I looked at wrestling as something that the men in my family enjoyed, and I always just thought it was a big, fake joke.
But Fighting With My Family really showed me that there are people out there that take this sport seriously and despite it being staged, it’s just like any other show that’s performed to entertain an audience.
Oh and Florence Pugh, the star of this movie, also stared in Little Women (which I hated, by the way, lol) and she’ll also be staring in Black Widow later on this year!
I’m so excited for her!
