If you watched “Hawkeye” on Disney Plus and were introduced to the badass deaf martial arts fighter played by Native American actress Alaqua Cox, who’s known as Maya Lopez, you probably immediately fell in love with her, as I did. So when Marvel announced an “Echo” miniseries shortly after “Hawkeye” ended, I was thrilled! I wanted Maya’s backstory and was pleased they were giving us one almost immediately after introducing her to us on screen.
But does this series excite the inner geeky goddess in me, the way “Wandavision“, “Ms. Marvel” or even “Moon Knight” does? Well, I guess I’ll tell you that once I’ve seen all the episodes! But until then, here’s a quick review (and my thoughts) of episode 3 of the new Marvel series “Echo” now streaming on Disney+.
Echo Marvel Episode 3 Quick Review
When Disney+ sent over screeners of “Echo” episodes 1, 2, and 3, my heart immediately filled with glee! And now after seeing the first 3 episodes of Marvel’s new “Echo” series, I’m all in!
“Echo” episode 3 definitely gave me “Harley Quinn” vibes, from the colors to the skating rink. It felt pretty similar to the roller skating fight scene in “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)”. To me at least. Which I kind of liked!
I also no longer have issues with the fight scenes as I did in episode 1, so I’m glad all the kinks got worked out over time. And I loved the silent Western vibes we got at the beginning of this episode! I grew up watching Westerns, so I love a well-done nod back to those times.
This was a pretty good episode. But with only two episodes left, we’re pretty much halfway through this series! And it’s going to be over before we know it!
Plus, this may have been the first episode where we got a Native American song? And I don’t know how to feel about that. I know we shouldn’t compare, but one of the things I loved the most about “Moon Knight” was how the culture was so deeply woven into the story, including the background music. And “Echo” just doesn’t seem to have that wow factor yet.
Which breaks my heart because I love it when these series deep dive into a certain period and weave it into the fabric of its every being, ya know?
And with only two episodes left, I’m worried! I’m worried this series won’t matter in a few months. That it’ll just be thrown to the wayside, and forgotten about. Like how we all just up and stopped talking about “Secret Invasion”? Yeah, like that!
Because this character deserves so much more than that! Native Americans deserve to have a dope-ass superhero they can call their own, one that f*cking matters! In the MCU timeline, and to everyone that watches it!! And right now, this series is good, but not good enough. Sigh.
Hopefully that changes with the last two episodes.
