“Echo” Episode 2 Review: No More Pacing Issues Baby — And Maya’s Got A Magical Gift?

If you watched “Hawkeye” on Disney Plus and were introduced to the badass deaf martial arts fighter played by Native American actress Alaqua Cox, who’s known as Maya Lopez, you probably immediately fell in love with her, as I did. So when Marvel announced an “Echo” miniseries shortly after “Hawkeye” ended, I was thrilled! I wanted Maya’s backstory and was pleased they were giving us one almost immediately after introducing her to us on screen.

But does this series excite the inner geeky goddess in me, the way “Wandavision“, “Ms. Marvel” or even “Moon Knight” does? Well, I guess I’ll tell you that once I’ve seen all the episodes! But until then, here’s a quick review (and my thoughts) of episode 2 of the new Marvel series “Echo” now streaming on Disney+.

Echo Marvel Episode 2 Quick Review

When Disney Plus sent over screeners of “Echo” episodes 1, 2, and 3, my heart immediately filled with glee! But after watching episode 1 of Marvel’s new “Echo” series, I was a tad bit disappointed. However, they quickly redeemed themselves with episode 2.

“Echo” episode 2 seems to have gotten rid of those pacing issues we had in episode 1, which I’m super happy about. Because boy was that a downer.

And now that the story no longer feels like it’s a derailed train just waiting to crash at any given moment, things have gotten a whole lot more interesting!

We get another flashback into the past, before diving into Maya’s current issues, and it’s finally all coming together now and making sense! These flashbacks aren’t just flashbacks, they’re her ancestors trying to guide her! Which I totally freaking love.

But for a show that’s supposed to highlight Native Americans, I’m not sure how great of a job they’re doing in that department just yet. And that could very well be because they’re doing such a great job that everything just feels so natural to her story.

Or it could just be my own lack of knowledge.

I geeked out over “Moon Knight” because they wove in the Egyptian mythology that we learned about in school. But almost everything we learned about the Native Americans in school, was traumatic. We rarely got the good stories.

So I don’t have much to base my opinions on right now. Which sucks, because I was excited to dive into this Native American superhero story. Now I’m not sure how to feel.

However, episode 2 does kick this series into hyperdrive, and I’m totally excited to see what happens next. It may have also hinted that Maya Lopez may have magical powers, handed down from her ancestors?

There’s a scene where she’s given an extra boost of help from her ancestors, that ties back into all the weird stories and flashbacks we’ve gotten in episodes 1 and 2 so far.

So I’m super interested in learning what her full powers really are! And secretly hoping one of them is echolocation, because why else would this be called “Echo”?

We also finally get to see why they kept showing us her god damn leg every freaking 5 seconds in episode 1! Because boy was that beginning to piss me TF off. Like, we get it! She lost one of her legs, make your point already! I couldn’t tell if they wanted to just keep reminding us that she has a disability, or if they were hinting at something coming up.

But episode 2 clears that right up!

They were hinting at something, and I feel like it may have a thing or two to do with her new superhero costume? At least I hope so!

Of course, now that things are finally getting good, and we’ve finally gotten rid of the pacing issues, episode 2 feels like it ends a bit too abruptly. But it does make me want to see episode 3! So I guess this would make for a good binge after all?
