So I got invited to a media mixer at thee Brooklyn Chop House, which was hosted by Ally (yes, the bank), the night before the American Black Film Festival’s (ABFF) Pop Up here in NYC and zoo-wee-mama!
Not only was it one of those perfect NYC nights that outsiders always seem to envy, with film critics and journalists swapping stories between sips of martinis. But the vibes and food were also great!
Brooklynites have been talking about Brooklyn Chop House for the last few years, and since I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting before, I was a tad bit excited. But as a native New Yorker, who doesn’t always love what everyone else loves, I walked in not expecting much.
So if you’re like me, and always a little hesitant when folks rave about the latest hot spot, and you’re wondering whether Brooklyn Chop House lives up to the hype, or not, here’s my honest review.
Full Brooklyn Chop House Review

Before we move forward, let me just say that this NYC spot is worth the hype!
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I walked into Brooklyn Chop House. I had only glanced at the menu a few hours beforehand. But after spending two hours there, I have to say. The vibes were vibing, the staff was super chill and friendly, and every bite I tried convinced me I had to visit again with friends.
So, what kind of food is served at Brooklyn Chop House in NYC?
I was shocked to find out that not only is Brooklyn Chop House a steakhouse, but it’s also known for its Asian-fusion flavors. And while we weren’t able to try the steak, every dish that did hit the table had that “wow, I can’t wait to eat this again” effect.
Here’s how my taste buds rated the night:
- Rock Shrimp Tempura: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Perfectly crisp, light, and flavorful. Hands down, everyone’s favorite dish of the night. - Crispy Steamed Pork Dumplings: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½
These were really freaking good. - Chicken Wontons: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Crunchy and packed with flavor, this one totally surprised me. - Lettuce Vegetable Wraps: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fresh, crunchy, and a nice balance to all the fried bites, although I wouldn’t necessarily buy these. - Short Rib Bao Buns: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Super soft and melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. I should have grabbed more! - Spring Roll: ⭐️⭐️⭐️½
Fine but forgettable — totally don’t need to get these again despite rolls usually being a fave. - Chicken Satay: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was my least favorite, and honestly, I was so full from everything else that I never finished it.
Overall, these appetizers were fantastic, and I can’t WAIT to go back and taste everything else.

How are the drinks at Brooklyn Chop House in NYC?
I only had two martinis… but they were both pretty good. I’m so used to martini’s being made with vodka, that I didn’t realize there was a Tequila option!
So after trying their Lychee Martini with vodka, which was pretty darn good. I grabbed a Passion Fruit Martini with tequila! Unfortunately, this one wasn’t as sweet as I was hoping it would be, so I preferred the Lychee Martini, but I’m sure had I told them to make it sweeter, it would have been perfect.
- Lychee Martini: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½
- Passion Fruit Martini: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Note: The Brooklyn Chop House in Times Square has happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday through Friday! You’re welcome.

Quick Side Note: The Ally x ABFF Media Mixer was such a vibe …
One thing about me? I love when work and passion collide — and that’s exactly what happened at the Ally x ABFF media mixer at Brooklyn Chop House. The room was filled with people who live and breathe creativity — and it honestly felt good to be surrounded by that kind of energy again.
Getting to meet and talk with Jeff and Nicole Friday, the founders of ABFF, was such a full-circle moment for me. As someone who’s been covering film and TV for years — and who’s desperate to finally make it to Miami for the festival — hearing them speak about their mission to celebrate Black actors and filmmakers really hit home. That was why I started Popcorn and Tequila five years ago.
I had the pleasure of covering the American Black Film Festival virtually in 2020, but single mom life meant that I could never attend in person. (Each year my June calendar is packed with graduations, recitals, and dance competitions, and I take pride in being able to show up for my daughter. Even if that means having to put my own wants aside.) So I was super excited to hear the festival is moving to May in 2026. Here’s to hoping I’ll finally get to experience the magic in person!
I still think about how incredible Sundance felt when I found myself in spaces built for us — thanks to Blackhouse — so getting to attend a festival that celebrates only us sounds magical, and I can’t wait.
ABFF will return to Miami Beach, May 27-31, 2026, under the celebratory theme “The Homecoming”, as they celebrate their 10-year anniversary! And I can’t wait to celebrate with them.

So yeah, Brooklyn Chop House … I’ll be back.
I had a great time at this media mixer, and I truly can’t wait to plan a dinner here with my friends.
We had a blast dining at Fushimi in Williamsburg, which has a similar vibe and menu, so I just know they’re going to love it here. I look forward to trying the steak and full dishes at Brooklyn Chop House soon. If you’re looking for your next foodie escape in NYC, this is it, baby! Add this one to the list.

Escapism Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 out of 5 stars – Only because this was an event, and I’m not sure what the atmosphere is really like here, outside of a prepaid brand mixer.
Perfect For: Food lovers craving an elevated night out.
What It Helps You Forget: Pretty much everything, if you grab that shrimp and a bao bun or two with good company.

You’re a solo mamacita? Me too! The food looks delicious. I’m trying to master the crispy wontons at home but there’s some step I’m missing. I’m going out to happy hour today with my sister and have plans to try a martini for the first time ever. I hope this goes over well lol!
Yes ma’am!! And omgosh! I thought martini’s would be disgusting, but as long as they’re a good flavor I’m down! (And cosmo’s!)
